Tinubu Commends Troops for Ensuring Security of Major Highway Project

President Bola Tinubu has commended the Nigerian Army for their role in securing the ongoing Illela–Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway project, a key infrastructure initiative under his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The commendation was conveyed by the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, during an operational visit to troops stationed at the Forward Operations Base Laager in Kebbi State. The visit was detailed in a statement released on Friday in Abuja by Mati Ali, the Minister’s Personal Assistant on Media and Publicity.

Badaru highlighted the importance of the highway project, describing it as a transformative initiative that will boost economic activities and significantly improve transportation across the country.

“The President commends your dedication in protecting personnel and equipment involved in this vital project,” the minister said. “This highway is a game-changer, especially for travelers moving between Sokoto and Lagos. It is expected to generate numerous jobs and open up new economic opportunities.”

He added that President Tinubu had entrusted him with the responsibility of delivering his appreciation in person, emphasizing the strategic significance of the soldiers’ mission in ensuring the safety and success of the project.

In October 2024, the federal government launched the dualisation of the 1,068-kilometre highway, beginning from Illela in Sokoto State. The project will traverse seven states—Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos—and is being executed by Hitech Construction Company Limited.

The first phase of the project is scheduled for completion by 2027. Alongside the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, the Illela–Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway is part of a broader federal infrastructure initiative expected to cost ₦13 trillion.

The government has stated it will enforce strict quality control measures to ensure the delivery of durable and high-standard infrastructure.
