Tinubu Merges Ministries: Niger Delta, Sports Scrapped

President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council (FEC) have made significant structural changes within the Nigerian government, scrapping both the Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development. This decision was confirmed by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, Bayo Onanuga, via a tweet on Wednesday.

The Niger Delta Ministry’s functions will now be absorbed by a newly established Ministry of Regional Development. This new ministry will oversee all regional development commissions, including the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and others such as the North East, North West, and South West Development Commissions. This consolidation aims to streamline regional development efforts across Nigeria.

Additionally, the responsibilities of the Ministry of Sports Development will now be transferred to the National Sports Commission, which will handle all sports-related activities nationwide.

In a related development, the FEC also approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy, creating a single entity to focus on cultural and creative industry development alongside tourism. These changes reflect Tinubu’s ongoing efforts to restructure and optimize government functions for better efficiency.
