President Bola Tinubu, on Saturday, inaugurated a N73 billion office complex for the Nigeria Customs Service in Ogun State, aimed at strengthening operations and capacity.

The facility, located in Iperu, Ogun State, serves as the new base for the Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, and includes office buildings and a training college designed to enhance efficiency within the Service.

“I hereby declare this building open, to the glory of God,” President Tinubu said during the inauguration, while commending the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for initiating the project.

Mr Adeniyi explained that the relocation from the congested Ikeja office in Lagos was necessary to accommodate the growing responsibilities of the Service.

He said the new complex would help balance key mandates such as revenue generation, trade facilitation, and enforcement, while also improving staff welfare.

“We needed a bigger and more conducive environment to accommodate our expanding operations,” he stated.

Project scope

The Customs boss noted that the facility is strategically positioned to support emerging trade infrastructure, including export processing and cargo operations linked to nearby aviation facilities.

He added that officers have already been deployed to key operational areas, including airport terminals and cargo sections, in preparation for increased activity.

According to Mr Adeniyi, the complex features modern infrastructure such as a fully furnished office space, a warehouse opposite the main building, and plans for a modern armory.

He disclosed that the project, initially valued at N73 billion, is about 45 per cent completed, with plans to seek presidential approval for a cost review in line with current economic realities.

State support

Mr Adeniyi credited the Ogun State Government, led by Dapo Abiodun, for providing over 50 hectares of land and supporting the project with essential infrastructure.

He also acknowledged the contributions of his predecessor in securing the land and initiating the development.

The inauguration underscores efforts by the Federal Government to modernise customs operations, enhance trade facilitation, and strengthen Nigeria’s logistics and revenue systems amid growing economic demands.
