A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Haruna Yerima, has declared that President Bola Tinubu will secure victory in the 2027 presidential election if he retains Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate.
Yerima, a former member of the House of Representatives, made this statement in Abuja on Saturday while reacting to calls by the Northern Ethnic Nationality Forum urging Tinubu to drop Shettima and avoid repeating a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
The group had advised the president to consider choosing a Christian from Plateau, Benue, or Taraba states to counter what it described as fears of an Islamisation agenda.
Dismissing the call, Yerima described the claim as “insane and unfounded,” insisting that suggestions that an Atiku Abubakar–Peter Obi ticket could defeat Tinubu and Shettima in 2027 were “jaundiced and amateur political permutations.”
He said the Tinubu presidency had already demonstrated inclusiveness and refuted claims of religious bias. According to him, “any attempt to impose a running mate on President Tinubu would backfire and face outright rejection.”
Yerima cautioned against mixing religion with politics, stressing that Shettima had proven his loyalty, competence, and commitment in his role as vice president.
