A tragic incident occurred in Lagos on Monday when an electrician was electrocuted while working to reconnect power cables in a residential area. The victim, whose name has not been officially released, was carrying out repairs when he came into contact with a live wire.
The incident happened in the Ijora area of Lagos, according to eyewitnesses. Residents say the electrician was called in after several houses experienced a blackout. While working on the high-tension lines, power was suddenly restored, leading to the fatal shock.
โHe was up on the pole reconnecting the wires when the power came back on,โ said one resident. โThere was a loud sound and we saw him fall. It was very scary.โ
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and confirmed the electrician had died before help could reach him. His body was later taken away by authorities for proper handling.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has urged electricians and technicians to follow all safety procedures and work only with full coordination with electricity distribution companies (DisCos). A spokesperson from the agency noted, โThis is a painful reminder of the dangers people face when working with electricity. Communication with power authorities is crucial before any work is done.โ
Electricity safety experts say incidents like this highlight the urgent need for better regulation, proper training, and stronger safety enforcement for technicians working in risky environments. Many electricians, especially in informal sectors, work without proper gear or official approval from the DisCos.
Residents and community leaders in Ijora are mourning the loss and calling for stricter oversight to prevent similar tragedies.
As Nigeria continues to face power supply challenges, experts say worker safety must not be overlooked. Every life counts, and no one should lose their life while trying to serve their community.
