The Anambra State Police Command has sparked public shock and fury following the arrest of two young men allegedly responsible for the gruesome murder of an 80-year-old woman, Theresa Igbojonu, in Ihiala.
According to a Tuesday statement by Police Spokesman SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspects—Chidiebere Igboanugo and Emmanuel Ibeabuchi, both of Umunwaji Ogboro, Ihiala—tied the elderly woman’s legs and mouth before killing her in cold blood, reportedly to steal her black CG motorcycle.
The disturbing crime, which many residents have described as a symbol of moral collapse and youth desperation, has reignited calls for tougher punishment on crimes against the elderly.
“What kind of society have we become when our grandmothers aren’t safe from violent robbery in their own homes?” lamented a local youth leader.
The police confirmed that the stolen motorcycle has been recovered, and investigations—initiated on April 2nd—are still ongoing.
As the story continues to stir controversy across social media, community leaders are demanding justice and a broader conversation on safety, poverty, and youth values in southeastern Nigeria.
