In a shocking and tragic incident, nine workers lost their lives and eleven others were seriously injured when a mango-laden lorry overturned on a rural highway early Monday morning.
The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. when the vehicle, reportedly overloaded with crates of mangoes, lost control while negotiating a sharp bend. The lorry overturned, crushing several laborer’s who were travelling in the cargo section and some who were walking alongside the vehicle.
Local residents and eyewitnesses rushed to the scene and began rescue efforts before emergency services arrived. “It all happened in seconds. The vehicle was swaying and then suddenly tipped over. The crates just fell like a landslide,” said Ramesh Kumar, a local farmer who was among the first responders.
Police and medical teams from [nearest town/hospital] reached the spot and transported the injured to the district hospital. Authorities confirmed that nine people died on the spot, while eleven others sustained serious injuries and are undergoing treatment. Some remain in critical condition.
Initial investigations suggest the vehicle was overloaded beyond its capacity and may have had mechanical issues. The driver reportedly fled the scene but was later detained by police. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and Indian Penal Code, including negligent driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
District officials have assured compensation for the families of the deceased and promised a thorough inquiry into the incident. “This is a grave tragedy. We will ensure that the victims’ families receive all possible support and that accountability is established,” said a senior district officer.
The incident has once again raised concerns over safety practices in the transport of agricultural produce, especially during peak harvest seasons. Road safety experts have called for stricter enforcement of vehicle loading regulations and better training for drivers handling rural freight.
As the community mourns the loss of nine lives, questions loom over systemic negligence and the urgent need for reform in rural transportation standards.
