On December 26th, tragedy struck along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway as Rev. Fr. Tobias Chukwujekwu Okonkwo, a Catholic priest of Nnewi Diocese in Anambra State, was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen. The incident occurred between 7 and 8 pm, leaving the local community in shock and mourning.
Fr. Okonkwo, who also served as a pharmacist and the priest in charge of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Ihiala, was widely respected for his dedication to his faith and service to the community. His sudden and violent death has sparked an outpouring of grief among parishioners, colleagues, and friends.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear as investigations are ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to aid in apprehending the perpetrators.
The Diocese of Nnewi released a statement expressing profound sorrow over the loss, calling Fr. Okonkwo a “beacon of hope and faith” whose contributions to the church and healthcare will not be forgotten.
