Liverpool Football Club and the global football community are mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car accident late Tuesday night. He was 28 years old.
According to early reports from Merseyside Police, the accident occurred near the M62 motorway shortly after 11:30 p.m. local time. Emergency services arrived on the scene within minutes, but despite their efforts, Jota was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released further details, and investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
Liverpool FC confirmed Jota’s death in a statement released Wednesday morning, expressing their devastation and offering condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and supporters around the world.
“Diogo was not only an exceptional footballer, but also a beloved member of our club and community. Our thoughts are with his wife, Rute, and their children during this unimaginably difficult time,” the club said.
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and quickly became a fan favorite for his sharp attacking instincts, relentless work rate, and crucial goals in both domestic and European competitions. Over his five seasons at Anfield, he made more than 140 appearances and scored 47 goals.
He was also a regular for the Portugal national team, representing his country in major international tournaments, including the European Championship and the World Cup.
Tributes have poured in from across the footballing world, with teammates, coaches, and fans expressing their grief and sharing memories of the forward both on and off the pitch.
Cristiano Ronaldo, a fellow Portuguese international, wrote on social media: “Heartbroken. Diogo was a brother, a fighter, and a joy to play with. Rest in peace, my friend.”
Liverpool have announced that a memorial will be held at Anfield in the coming days to honor Jota’s life and legacy.
