Truck owners and commuters are raising alarms over escalating losses caused by the deteriorating Calabar-Uyo federal highway, which has become notorious for frequent accidents, vehicle damage, and destruction of goods. Despite repeated promises, including a recent inspection by Works Minister David Umahi three months ago, rehabilitation efforts remain stalled.

Truck owner Samson Etete, whose vehicle recently fell into a ditch, lamented significant losses, compounded by the fact that his insurance had expired. Another truck driver, Edet Uforo, described the road as a “nightmare,” with heavy-duty vehicles frequently breaking down or toppling over, causing traffic jams and severe delays.

Commuters like Eno Johnson also highlighted the dangers of being stranded overnight due to blocked roads. Calls for urgent repairs have largely gone unanswered, leaving both businesses and lives at risk.
