US President Donald Trump has warned China of a potential 50 per cent tariff on its exports if Beijing provides military assistance to Iran amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Mr Trump issued the warning during an interview on Fox News, stating that the United States would impose severe economic penalties if China is found supporting Iran militarily.
“If we catch them doing that, they get a 50 per cent tariff, which is a staggering amount,” he said.
The remarks signal a possible escalation in tensions between Washington and China, particularly as the Middle East war continues to reshape global alliances.
Diplomatic backdrop
The US leader is expected to visit Beijing next month for high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The meeting had earlier been postponed due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
Observers say the planned talks could play a crucial role in easing tensions or deepening divisions between the two global powers.
Global implications
The threat of tariffs adds a new economic dimension to the geopolitical crisis, raising concerns about potential disruptions to global trade and supply chains.
Analysts warn that any escalation between the US and China could have far-reaching consequences for international markets, especially amid existing instability linked to the Middle East war.
