Lagos – The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the deaths of two individuals and serious injuries to two others in separate road accidents that occurred in the early hours of Monday, December 8, 2025.
In a statement issued by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, the first incident took place around 2:30 a.m. at the Otedola Bridge, inward Berger, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
Preliminary findings indicate that an unregistered vehicle, carrying two occupants, was travelling at an “egregiously unlawful and hazardous velocity” when it collided with a heavily laden moving trailer. Both occupants of the vehicle were killed instantly, while the trailer driver fled the scene. LASTMA’s Night-Gang Teams promptly evacuated the bodies and cleared the wreckage to prevent secondary accidents. Officers from the Isheri Police Division and the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) provided additional support.
The second crash occurred around 5:00 a.m. on the Third Mainland Bridge, near the University of Lagos waterfront, inward Lagos Island. The collision involved an empty tanker and a sachet-water distribution van (number plate SMK 67 XH), leaving two people seriously injured. Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) personnel provided first aid and transported the victims to a nearby hospital.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the fatalities as “tragic and wholly preventable.” He emphasized that reckless speeding and disregard for road safety regulations continue to endanger lives.
Bakare-Oki reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to strict enforcement of government-approved speed limits, calling compliance “indispensable for the preservation of human life and the avoidance of catastrophic avoidable tragedies.”
He also praised the professionalism and prompt intervention of LASTMA’s Night-Gang Teams and assured Lagos residents that the agency’s 24-hour surveillance and rapid-response operations will continue with “unwavering vigour” in the new year, in line with the Lagos State Government’s commitment to public safety and orderly traffic flow.
