Two persons sustained injuries after two trucks collided at the Arepo Bridge area along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the early hours of Sunday.
The accident, which occurred around 4 a.m. at Arepo Bridge, involved an empty American Cola truck and a Seaco truck. The crash caused traffic gridlock along the busy highway as officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) worked to clear the wreckage from the road.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said one of the drivers sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
A witness, Mrs Ibukun Victoria, said the second driver escaped with minor injuries.
“One of the drivers was seriously injured and taken to the hospital, while the other only had minor injuries,” Mrs Victoria told PUNCH Online.
Another driver who witnessed the incident attributed the crash to waste materials allegedly left on the highway.
The driver said the debris may have contributed to the loss of control that led to the collision.
Background
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, serving as a major link between Lagos and several South-Western states and other parts of the country.
Accidents on the route are often linked to speeding, poor visibility, mechanical failure, and road obstructions.
The crash caused significant traffic congestion in the area as emergency responders worked to remove the trucks and restore normal traffic flow.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps were seen making efforts to tow the affected vehicles off the road to ease movement for motorists.
Authorities are expected to provide further details on the incident as investigations continue.
