Two Residents Killed As Gunmen Attack Irunda-Ile Community In Kogi, Locals Allege Security Operatives Also Opened Fire
Two residents have been confirmed dead following an early-morning attack on Irunda-Ile, a community in Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, triggered widespread panic as armed attackers reportedly invaded the community and opened fire indiscriminately.
A community source told SaharaReporters that the situation escalated when security operatives deployed to the Isanlu–Irunda axis were allegedly seen shooting at unarmed civilians.
“The security operatives in Isanlu–Irunda reportedly shot at unarmed citizens. Two people have been shot now. We will seek legal redress,” the source said.
Residents described the attack as completely unprovoked, noting that the deaths have deepened fear in a community already battling persistent insecurity.
Local sources confirmed the fatalities, saying the victims were ordinary residents caught in the chaos. They called on the Kogi State government and security agencies to conduct a transparent investigation and ensure that those responsible — whether terrorists or erring security personnel — are held accountable.
Community leaders appealed for calm while urging authorities to improve security across rural settlements in Yagba East, which have suffered recurring violent incidents in recent months.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kogi State Police Command has not issued an official statement on the attack.
