U.S. Has No Case Against Sheikh Gumi, Onoh

A former spokesman of the Labour Party presidential campaign, Yunusa Tanko Onoh, has clarified that the United States has no legal case against Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, dismissing reports and speculations suggesting otherwise.

Onoh made the clarification amid widespread public commentary following recent developments involving the cleric, stressing that there is no indictment, charge, or active investigation by U.S. authorities against Sheikh Gumi. He described claims linking the Islamic scholar to any U.S. legal action as misleading and unfounded.

According to Onoh, available information indicates that Sheikh Gumi’s situation should not be misconstrued as a criminal matter, adding that misinformation could further inflame tensions and distract from addressing Nigeria’s broader security challenges. He urged the public to rely on verified facts rather than speculation.

Onoh also cautioned against the politicisation of security-related issues, noting that false narratives can undermine national cohesion and damage reputations without evidence. He called on media organisations and commentators to uphold professional standards by verifying claims before publication.

Sheikh Gumi, a controversial but influential cleric, has remained a prominent voice in national conversations on insecurity, particularly in northern Nigeria. Onoh’s statement, he said, was aimed at setting the record straight and preventing the spread of inaccurate information.

He added that constructive dialogue and fact-based engagement remain essential as Nigeria continues to confront complex security and governance challenges.
