US Alerts Citizens as Shi’ite Protest Holds in Lagos Over Iran Strikes

The United States has alerted its citizens in Nigeria as members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria stage a protest in Lagos over the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in US and Israeli strikes.

The protest follows reports that Khamenei was killed during coordinated strikes on Tehran.

Iranian media also report that his wife, Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, died from injuries sustained during the attack. While several senior Iranian officials are also said to have been killed.

In Lagos, members of the South-West leadership of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria march through parts of the Maryland axis. They carried placards and banners condemning what they describe as an attack on Iran’s sovereignty.

The South-West Coordinator of the movement, Muftau Zakariya, says the protest is peaceful. Adding that the demonstration expressed solidarity with Iran and opposition to the actions of the United States and Israel.

Zakariya also urged the Federal Government to reject any presence of US troops in Nigeria.

Protests spread to other States

Similar demonstrations took place in Kano, Bauchi, Gombe and Yobe states.

In Kano, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, said officers are deployed to monitor the protest. He added that the group does not formally notify the police but security agencies act on intelligence reports.

In Bauchi, the Police Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Habib, confirmed that the protest is peaceful with no breakdown of law and order.

However, demonstrators in Yobe march through Potiskum, Bade and Nguru. Some burn US and Israeli flags while carrying portraits of Khamenei.

Background

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria holds the demonstrations to mourn the reported killing of the Iranian leader and to show solidarity with Iran.

Authorities across affected states increase monitoring but report no major incidents.

The situation develops amid rising tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel.
