Controversial social commentator Verydarkman has sparked fresh debate over the relevance of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) after publicly questioning its value and offering to help a viral corps member allegedly facing government blacklisting.
In a fiery statement, Verydarkman dismissed the NYSC scheme as a waste of time, arguing that graduates should focus on acquiring skills or working instead of participating in a program that often leads to unemployment.
“I don’t even know why you are going for the NYSC. At the end of the day, no work,” he stated, echoing growing frustrations among Nigerian youths about job scarcity and economic instability.
His comments come after a female corps member went viral for her bold criticism of the government and the current economic situation. While many praised her courage, concerns arose that her outspoken remarks could lead to blacklisting and difficulties securing employment.
Verydarkman, however, reassured her, saying: “If the going gets tough, and you try the private sector and they don’t employ you, we go find work give you.”
His remarks have since divided public opinion. Some young Nigerians hailed him for speaking uncomfortable truths, while others accused him of disrespecting a national institution.
Meanwhile, the alleged blacklisting of the corps member has intensified concerns over freedom of speech in Nigeria, with critics arguing that young voices are being silenced for challenging the status quo.
As discussions heat up, the question remains: Is NYSC still a valuable program, or is it failing Nigeria’s youth? And more importantly, is the government punishing dissenters under the guise of ‘discipline’?”
