ABUJA, Nigeria — August 7, 2025
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has suspended access to the 2025 WASSCE results due to what it described as “technical issues” affecting its official result portal, . The announcement came just two days after the Council released the results on August 5, leading to widespread concern and confusion among candidates, families, and schools.
In a statement released via WAEC’s verified social media platforms, the Council acknowledged the problem and assured the public that their technical team was “working round the clock” to restore access within 24 to 48 hours. It also advised candidates to remain calm and refrain from repeated log-in attempts, which could further burden the system.
This interruption has affected millions of candidates across Nigeria and other West African countries, many of whom are in the middle of admission processes to tertiary institutions. Schools and parents have also expressed frustration, citing a lack of direct communication beyond social media updates.
WAEC’s official report earlier this week showed a decline in performance, with only 38.32% of candidates obtaining credits in five core subjects, including English and Mathematics. The results had already sparked debate about declining academic standards, and this latest glitch has added another layer of public concern about the Council’s operations and reliability.
This incident is not the first time WAEC has faced scrutiny over its digital infrastructure. Education stakeholders are now calling for a comprehensive audit of the Council’s IT systems, better public communication strategies, and contingency plans that prioritize access for all candidates, including those in remote or under-resourced communities.
