Lagos, Nigeria — A Nigerian soldier, Joseph Bukola Abayomi, has been declared missing at the Ikoyi Barracks in Lagos while preparing for his day’s duty.
Voice of the People (VOP) learnt that the incident, which occurred on Tuesday, October 21, has left his family in deep distress as all efforts to trace him have so far failed.
Abayomi, with Army number 23NA/84/0644 and a member of Intake 84, was attached to the Cantonment Barracks, Victoria Island, commonly known as Ikoyi Barracks.
A family source told Voice of the People (VOP) that:
“He woke up in the barracks preparing for the day’s duty. He left his brush, toothpaste, and phone on the table outside, and they couldn’t trace him.”
The source added that the family was not notified of his disappearance immediately.
“They called to inform the mother after six days,” the family member said.
According to relatives, Abayomi was known for his dedication to duty and had never shown any sign of wanting to abandon his post.
“We don’t understand what happened. It’s unlike him. The family just wants to know what went wrong,” another relative told Voice of the People (VOP).
As of press time, the Nigerian Army has not issued an official statement regarding the soldier’s disappearance.
