Why Talking to Bandits Could Backfire — It Rewards Violence, Experts Warn

Abuja — Public affairs commentator has cautioned the federal government against negotiating with bandits, saying such actions encourage lawlessness and undermine national security.

Speaking during a live program on VOP TV, the analyst said that dialogue with criminal groups only serves to legitimize their activities, embolden them, and send a dangerous message to society that violence is a viable path to attention or reward.

“Negotiating with bandits sends the wrong message — that violence is rewarded,” he said. “The government must demonstrate strength, uphold justice, and protect law-abiding citizens rather than compromise with criminals.”

He argued that successive governments have repeatedly fallen into the trap of appeasement, granting amnesty or financial incentives to armed groups, which has done little to end insecurity across the country.

According to him, genuine peace cannot be achieved through compromise with lawbreakers but through firm enforcement of the law, improved intelligence operations, and sustained investment in community security.

“We can’t continue treating terrorists and bandits with soft hands while innocent citizens suffer. Nigeria needs a government that stands for justice, not negotiations with those who thrive on bloodshed,” he added.

Security analysts have echoed similar views, warning that the failure to prosecute or neutralize violent groupsencourages new cells to emerge, leading to a cycle of violence and ransom-based criminality.
