Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced a ₦500 million donation by the Rivers Rainbow Coalition to the family of late Senator Barinada Mpigi.
Mr Wike made the disclosure in Port Harcourt during a Night of Tribute held in honour of the late lawmaker, who died on February 19 after a brief illness.
In a statement issued by his aide, Lere Olayinka, the minister said the fund would be used to establish a foundation to support the family and preserve the senator’s legacy.
“This will provide long-term support and ensure that the legacy of the late senator is sustained,” he said.
The development follows the death of Barinada Mpigi, a key political figure in Rivers State known for his influence in Ogoni politics and close alliance with Nyesom Wike.
His passing has drawn widespread tributes across party lines and created a political vacuum in the Rivers South-East Senatorial District.
Tributes pour in
Mr Wike described Mpigi, fondly called Barry, as a loyal and dependable ally who stood firm during difficult political periods.
“True character is revealed in times of adversity,” he said, noting that the late senator remained steadfast when others faltered.
He also praised Mpigi’s contributions to the Ogoni people, particularly his role in advancing the establishment of a federal university in the area.
Call for practical support
The minister urged political associates and allies of the late senator to go beyond words and offer tangible support to his family.
“Forming committees for burial is not enough. We must show clearly that we will not abandon the family he left behind,” Mr Wike stated.
Leaders across party lines paid glowing tributes, describing Mpigi as a bridge-builder and committed statesman.
Magnus Abe said the late lawmaker’s impact would remain indelible.
“We are not gathered merely because a man has died, but because of the life he lived,” he said.
Similarly, Tony Okocha described Mpigi as a consummate politician dedicated to party growth.
Family tribute
Speaking on behalf of the family, Monday Mpigi described the deceased as the backbone of the family.
“He was the rock of our family, very dependable and always there for everyone,” he said.
