The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned that founding members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not allow defectors from other parties to “kill” the political platform.
Wike made the remarks on Sunday during the 104th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led faction of the PDP, held at his official residence in Abuja.
The FCT minister also criticised the Tanimu Turaki-led faction for holding what he described as an “illegal convention,” in defiance of existing court rulings. He accused the group of ignoring two substantive Federal High Court judgments while attempting to seek recognition from a State High Court.
“You went to a State High Court to sue INEC, seeking to override Federal High Court rulings. How can you disobey final judgments and still claim leadership?” Wike questioned. He further criticised the faction for returning to court after holding their convention without compliance.
Wike stressed that selfish actions by party leaders could threaten the PDP’s future. “We must not allow our party to die. Leadership requires commitment and honesty, not propaganda. If we don’t respect our own laws, how do we earn respect from Nigerians?” he said, calling on members to support lawful leadership and unite to rebuild the party.
Meanwhile, NEC members recommended the creation of a Caretaker Committee, citing the imminent expiration of the current National Working Committee (NWC) tenure on Tuesday. The Board of Trustees Chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, affirmed that the move aligns with the party constitution, ensuring continuity, unity, and stability.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the NEC constituted a 13-member National Caretaker Committee, with Abdulrahman Mohammed as Chairman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu as Secretary. The committee is tasked with running party affairs for 60 days, overseeing pending congresses, and preparing for a national convention.
Other appointments included Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN) as National Legal Adviser and Umar Bature as National Organising Secretary, alongside members Dr. Kyari Grema, Janguda Mohammed, Okechukwu Osuana, Senator Nwogu Olaka, Senator Sandy Onor, Prof. Adenike Ogunse, Bisi Kolawole, Deji Doherty, and Dr. Ibrahim Aboki.
The committee’s establishment is aimed at consolidating internal reforms, enhancing organisational structure, and strengthening compliance with democratic and judicial processes.
