The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency has confirmed an accidental airstrike at a market in Yobe State, triggering an emergency response amid reports of civilian casualties.
The agency disclosed on Sunday that the incident occurred at Jilli Saturday Market in Gubio Local Government Area, a border community near Geidam.
According to SEMA, the victims include traders, many of whom were said to be from Geidam Local Government Area.
“The agency has received preliminary reports of an incident… which reportedly resulted in casualties affecting some traders,” the statement said.
It added that the response followed directives from Governor Mai Mala Buni.
Emergency response
SEMA said it had activated emergency mechanisms in collaboration with security agencies and health authorities to manage the situation.
Assessment teams have been deployed to the affected area to verify details and provide support to victims.
“In response… SEMA… has immediately activated emergency response mechanisms and deployed assessment teams to ascertain the facts and provide necessary support,” the agency stated.
Conflicting casualty figures
While initial reports indicated significant casualties, figures remain unconfirmed.
Local sources suggested dozens of deaths, while other reports put the toll significantly higher.
However, SEMA cautioned against circulating unverified information, stressing the need for accurate data.
Military operation
The Nigerian Air Force confirmed conducting precision airstrikes in the Jilli axis under Operation Hadin Kai, though it has not publicly addressed claims of civilian casualties.
The development has raised concerns about the risks of military operations in civilian-populated areas.
SEMA urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading speculation, assuring that the situation is being closely monitored.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families and the entire community at this difficult time,” the agency said.
