Youths from the 36 states and the FCT, numbering over 100, have protested against the continued demand for the scrapping of the National Youth Service Corps, saying it has become a national heritage and symbol of the country’s unity.

The NYSC was established in 1973 by a former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), to reconstruct, reconcile and rebuild Nigeria after the Civil War.

The scheme seeks the development of common ties among Nigerian youths and the promotion of national unity.

The youths, who acted under the aegis of ‘Nigeria First’, said the NYSC scheme should be protected and preserved, since its objective was the promotion of national integration among Nigerians
