No fewer than 17 people have been killed and eight others injured after armed men, suspected to be militias, launched a coordinated attack on returning Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Tse Ajogo village, Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State.
The violent assault occurred around 6 a.m. on Wednesday, 10 December 2025, as gunmen reportedly stormed the village, indiscriminately shooting at residents and vulnerable IDPs who had only recently returned after months of displacement due to prior insecurity in the region.
SaharaReporters gathered that several villagers remain missing, while seven houses were razed during the attack, leaving families traumatized and in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
Security expert Zagazola Makama confirmed the incident on Thursday, describing it as the second attack on returning IDPs in Tse Ajogo within just two months. He noted that the attackers appeared heavily armed, highly strategic, and determined to inflict maximum casualties.
โThis was clearly aimed at disrupting ongoing resettlement efforts,โ Makama said. โTse Ajogo is extremely vulnerable due to repeated incursions by armed militia groups, and the attackers planned this to spread fear among returning communities.โ
Tse Ajogo, located approximately four kilometres from Rafin Kada town, has long been considered a hotspot for violent militia operations. Security operatives have begun efforts to track down the perpetrators, while local authorities have called for heightened vigilance across affected communities.
Troops and law enforcement officials have been urged to intensify patrols along major routes to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of residents. Local leaders have advised villagersโparticularly the Tiv communities in the areaโto remain cautious and to report any suspicious movements immediately to security agencies.
The attack underscores the ongoing security challenges in Taraba State, where displaced populations remain vulnerable even as they attempt to return home and rebuild their lives.
