Over 200 young basketball players are expected to converge in Lagos for the final selection event of the Templar-Adrenale Athlete Development Initiative, one of Nigeria’s fast-rising grassroots sports development programmes.
The selection exercise is scheduled for Saturday, 23 May, 2026, at the newly renovated Dolphins Basketball Court in Mongoro, Ikeja, and is being organised in partnership with the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Adeyinka Adeboye.
Nationwide talent hunt reaches final stage
The initiative has, over several months, conducted nationwide scouting exercises targeting young athletes aged between 13 and 18.
Talent identification began at the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta and continued across multiple states through structured evaluation programmes aimed at discovering elite youth basketball prospects.
According to organisers, the final selection will determine the first official intake into the Templar-Adrenale High-Performance Development Programme.
Elite development pathway for young athletes
Selected players will benefit from a structured development system that includes professional basketball training, academic support, mentorship, character development, and international exposure opportunities.
The programme is designed to transition athletes from raw talent identification into long-term elite performance development, addressing long-standing gaps in Nigeria’s grassroots sports system.
Mr Adeyinka Adeboye is also expected to receive an international recognition award from United States-based partners during the event, in acknowledgment of his contributions to youth empowerment and structured sports development in Nigeria.
Organisers say the recognition reflects growing international interest in Nigeria’s grassroots sports ecosystem and development policies.
Sports analysts and development stakeholders say the initiative could mark a shift in Nigerian sports development, where talent identification becomes the beginning of a structured performance pathway rather than an endpoint.
They argue that sustained investment in youth development programmes could improve Nigeria’s competitiveness in international basketball and other sporting disciplines.
The Templar-Adrenale initiative is seen as part of this broader strategy to reposition sports as both a development tool and a career pathway for young Nigerians.
