Stakeholders from Abia North, under the aegis of the Alliance for Good Governance, have resolved to mobilise support for Governor Alex Otti ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The group made its position known at a meeting held on Saturday at the Isieke Civic Centre, Ugwueke, in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State. The stakeholders said their objective was to sustain what they described as the governance model introduced by the Otti administration.
Presenting the communique issued after the meeting, the group’s Secretary and spokesperson, Professor Mkpa Mkpa, said the stakeholders wanted the current governance approach to continue beyond 2031.
Professor Mkpa said the group had resolved to embark on extensive voter education, particularly among grassroots residents and youths.
He urged eligible voters not to succumb to pressure or electoral inducement from political parties and candidates.
The group said, “We resolved to embark on massive voter education, particularly at the grassroots and among the less literate.” It also called on youths not to sell their votes.
The Alliance described itself as non-partisan and said its members were elders from Abia North interested in sustaining what they regard as good governance in the state.
The stakeholders said their interest extended beyond the 2027 election, arguing that future administrations should continue with what they described as the template established by the Otti administration.
Professor Mkpa said, “The significance of what has happened in Osun goes far beyond the re-election of one governor”—however, the Abia group specifically framed its own position around the continuation of Otti’s governance model beyond his current tenure.
He urged the governor to continue implementing his programmes during the remainder of his first term and, if re-elected, into a second term.
Political structures
A former Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr Uchechukwu Ogah, said members of the Alliance had political structures that would be deployed for grassroots mobilisation and voter education.
Dr Ogah said, “Almost everyone here has a political structure. These structures will go to the grassroots to enlighten our people at the lowest level.”
Another stakeholder, Urum Kalu Eke, a former Group Managing Director of FBN Holdings, also expressed support for the governor’s administration, saying he was proud of Otti’s performance in public office.
The mobilisation adds another layer to political activity ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Abia State. The Alliance says it intends to use grassroots engagement and voter education to build support for Otti’s re-election, while its leaders are also advocating for the continuation of the administration’s governance approach beyond 2031.
The development comes shortly after Otti publicly discussed his political position regarding President Bola Tinubu and the 2027 election, distinguishing his support for Tinubu’s administration from the question of the Labour Party’s presidential candidate.
