Former Vice President and presidential aspirant Atiku Abubakar has accused the Nigerian Senate of undermining the electoral process by delaying amendments to the Electoral Act, warning that such delays amount to opening the door for rigging ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, Atiku expressed frustration over the Senate’s slow pace in passing critical reforms aimed at strengthening transparency, curbing electoral malpractice, and ensuring credible voting processes.
The delay in amending the Electoral Act is not just negligence; it is a threat to our democracy. If these reforms are not enacted promptly, we are effectively inviting electoral manipulation,” Atiku said.
He urged lawmakers to prioritize the passage of the amendments, which include provisions for electronic transmission of results, stricter penalties for vote-buying, and improved safeguards against electoral fraud. Atiku warned that any further procrastination could compromise the integrity of the 2027 elections.
Political analysts have noted that delayed electoral reforms have historically led to increased tensions and allegations of manipulation during Nigeria’s general elections, highlighting the urgency of Atiku’s concerns.
