The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says securing President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 has become his major political priority, urging Rivers residents to give the President massive support at the polls.
Mr Wike made the declaration on Monday during town hall meetings with the Rumueme and Apara kingdoms in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Mr Wike said his commitment to Tinubu’s second-term bid was not occasional but something he thinks about constantly.
“Each day I sleep, I am thinking about the president’s re-election. When I am eating, I think about the president’s re-election. Everything I am doing now is about the president’s re-election.”
He urged Rivers residents to set aside political sentiments and support Tinubu, arguing that the President had recognised the state through appointments and what he described as dividends of democracy.
“Let us forget sentiment and vote for the person who has recognised the people of Rivers state with dividends of democracy and with several appointments.”
Wike predicts easier victory for Tinubu in 2027
The FCT minister expressed confidence that Tinubu would perform better in Rivers State in 2027 than he did during the 2023 presidential election.
“I know the re-election of Tinubu in 2027 will be easier than that of 2023. We should appreciate Tinubu and ensure he gets a massive number of votes. We can do it.”
Mr Wike has previously clarified that his support for Tinubu does not mean the Peoples Democratic Party would be prevented from fielding candidates in other elections.
He said his position was specifically to mobilise support for Tinubu’s presidential re-election, while the PDP remained free to contest governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections.
Wike attacks Atiku, Amaechi and Obi
The minister also criticised opposition figures ahead of the 2027 election, taking particular aim at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is now the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, his running mate.
Mr Wike questioned their ability to mount a serious challenge against Tinubu and argued that the ADC would struggle to secure the required 25 percent of votes in Rivers State.
He also described former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and other opposition candidates as “unelectable politicians.”
Wike urges Rivers residents to back Tinubu
Mr Wike said the President had provided opportunities for Rivers people through appointments and development projects, urging residents to reciprocate with their votes.
His comments come amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with Mr Wike and other politicians promoting a cross-party Rainbow Coalition in support of Tinubu. Mr Wike has maintained that the coalition is separate from the APC and is intended to mobilise support for the President across party lines.
Mr Wike’s latest comments underline the intensifying political contest ahead of 2027, particularly in Rivers State, where the former governor continues to wield significant political influence.
For voters, the emerging battle is increasingly being shaped not only by party platforms but also by cross-party alliances, political realignments and the competing efforts to control key states ahead of the presidential poll.
