4 suspected bandits arrested near Akure airport The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has announced the arrest of four suspected bandits near Akure Airport following a joint security operation involving multiple agencies. The suspects were apprehended on Saturday, after security operatives received a distress alert about suspicious individuals sighted close to the airport perimeter in Ondo State. In a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection of FAAN, Henry Agbebire, the authority said the suspects were arrested during a coordinated security response. “The arrest followed a distress alert that suspicious individuals were sighted behind the airport perimeter towards the Eleye community,” Mr Agbebire said. He added that aviation security personnel and other agencies quickly mobilised to carry out a joint search operation in the area. According to FAAN, the operation involved the agency’s Aviation Security unit alongside personnel from the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force, as well as local security groups. During the search operation, some individuals reportedly attempted to flee the area before four suspects were eventually apprehended by the joint security team. The suspects have since been handed over to the Area Command of the Nigeria Police Force for further interrogation. The arrest highlights growing concerns about security around airport facilities and the need for stronger perimeter protection. FAAN noted that the incident underscores the importance of enhanced surveillance and rapid response mechanisms to prevent unlawful access to airport infrastructure. Additional Security Measures The authority said the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has accelerated the installation of modern perimeter fencing and other security infrastructure at airports across the country. The initiative is being implemented with the support of the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Background FAAN said work has already begun in phases to improve security at airports nationwide, with the aim of preventing illegal access and strengthening safety for travellers and host communities.
