A major catastrophic fire was averted in Ilorin, Kwara State, following the swift intervention of emergency responders after a petrol tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit crashed at a local filling station. The incident caused significant concern due to the high risk of a massive explosion and spillage.
The accident occurred at YTK Filling Station, located opposite the Youth Camp in the Apata area of Eyenkorin. According to officials, the tanker driver lost control while attempting to reposition the fully loaded vehicle within the station’s premises. The vehicle rammed directly into the facility’s perimeter fence, causing the compartment carrying the highly inflammable fuel to detach from the truck.
Emergency operatives from the Kwara State Fire Service arrived quickly at the scene to secure the area and immediately initiated cooling and dampening operations. Firefighters continuously saturated the surroundings and the damaged tanker with water to eliminate any potential sources of ignition and suppress volatile fuel vapors.
Following the containment of the immediate threat, officers supervised the safe transfer of the spilled fuel from the damaged compartment into another empty tanker. The coordinated operation successfully prevented an outbreak of fire, ending with zero casualties, injuries, or structural damage to nearby properties.
Fire authorities praised the rapid response and technical precision of the crew on site, while reiterating the need for tanker drivers and petroleum marketers to adhere strictly to safety protocols during the maneuvering, transport, and discharge of petroleum products.
