Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi has detailed how he reduced the cost of governance during his time in office.
Speaking in Washington, DC, on Monday, Obi said he deliberately avoided wasteful spending and the large entourages common among public officials.
He rejected inflated budgets for official facilities. “When I was governor, the budget for refurbishing my office was N298 million, but I did everything with N48 million. There was also a budget of N486 million to refurbish my house, but I completed everything with N81 million,” he said.
On travel, Obi explained that governors are expected to move with about 30 people. “Over the years I was governor, I didn’t use 16 percent of my travel allowance because I wasn’t travelling with anybody. I was the only person invited; nobody invited them.”
Obi stressed that Nigeria’s limited resources should be directed to productive sectors that improve citizens’ living conditions rather than the machinery of government.
