The atmosphere surrounding the Osun governorship election took a dramatic turn in Ikire after police arrested an Accord Party lawmaker alongside about 146 people at a private residence.
The lawmaker, Abiola Ibrahim Inaolaji, who represents the Irewole/Isokan constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly, was arrested in the early hours of Saturday, according to the police.
Police said the group was suspected of being brought into Osun to participate in unlawful electoral activities. The arrest followed an operation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation–Intelligence Response Team, with authorities saying investigations are ongoing.
But the incident has also raised questions about the people found at the residence and their account of why they were there.
In footage from the scene, Ibrahim told officers that the people gathered were voters and said some were indigenes from outside the area. He denied hiring them or directing their voting choices.
The development comes as voters across Ikire line up at polling units to exercise their right to vote, with the town witnessing significant voter activity.
For residents, the incident adds another layer to an already closely watched election, as security agencies work to prevent activities capable of undermining the credibility of the process.
The police have said investigations will determine the circumstances surrounding the gathering and establish whether electoral offences were committed.
For now, the focus remains on ensuring that voters can cast their ballots peacefully and that the outcome reflects the choices of the people of Osun State.
