The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Zamfara State has said it remains strong, united, and unshaken despite recent defections by some members to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Gusau by the Publicity Secretary, Mr. Halliru Andi, the ruling party in Zamfara described the defections as “acts driven by personal interest rather than public service.”
The reaction follows the defection of Hon. Maharazu Faru, member representing Maradun II Constituency in the State House of Assembly, who left the PDP for the APC alongside some ward executives.
Faru had blamed his defection on what he described as Governor Dauda Lawal’s failure to fulfill campaign promises, particularly in addressing insecurity in the state.
However, the PDP swiftly dismissed the claims, insisting that Governor Lawal’s administration is delivering on its mandate and steadily restoring the confidence of the people.
“While we respect his personal choice, we are not surprised,” the statement read.
“History has shown that those who place personal ambition above the collective good often end up on the wrong side of history.”
The party noted that Governor Lawal’s leadership is rebuilding institutions, restoring security, and reviving development across Zamfara.
“The ongoing reforms and development initiatives are clear proof that the PDP is the party of progress and compassion,” the statement added.
Mr. Andi further assured supporters that the PDP remains the party of the people, expressing confidence that the defections will not affect its dominance in future elections.
“We are confident that Hon. Faru will soon regret his decision, as the people of Zamfara have already decided to stand firmly with the PDP.
Come the next elections, our party will win overwhelmingly at all levels—from the wards to the national stage.”
The PDP called on its members to remain steadfast and proud, noting that “no defection can shake our foundation or stop the will of the people.”
As of the latest tally, Voice of the People (VOP) reports that the PDP still holds a majority in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, with 14 lawmakers, while the APC now has 10 members.
