Former presidential candidate and close ally of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Dele Momodu, has dismissed speculation that Atiku might step aside from the 2027 presidential race in favor of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi. Momodu said the rumors were “unsubstantiated” and rooted in political malice, insisting that Atiku has no reason to abandon his ambition for the presidency.
Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in November 2025, months after leaving the PDP. His defection is widely seen as a strategic move to secure the ADC’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election. Last week, Obi, who came third in 2023 with over six million votes, also moved from the Labour Party to the ADC, signaling a potential opposition realignment.
The speculation that Atiku might step aside for Obi intensified after reports suggested a possible understanding for Obi to serve a single four-year term and hand over to Atiku in 2031. Momodu rejected such claims, arguing that calls for Atiku to withdraw are driven by ageist prejudice rather than health or capability concerns. He emphasized Atiku’s track record in business, academia, philanthropy, and democratic activism, noting that attempts to sideline him are politically motivated.
Meanwhile, political observers, including former senator Shehu Sani, cautioned that public denials of withdrawal or deputy roles are often strategic, and final decisions may shift “in the national interest.” Despite the denials, insiders report ongoing behind-the-scenes discussions between Atiku and Obi aimed at forming a united opposition front against President Bola Tinubu. These talks reportedly focus on power rotation, zoning sensitivities, and a potential unity government to maximize nationwide support.
With both Atiku and Obi commanding strong followings, the ADC is shaping up for a competitive primary later this year, alongside other aspirants such as former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi. The contest for the party’s sole presidential ticket is expected to be intense, setting the stage for a high-stakes battle in the 2027 general election.
