ABUJA — The Federal Government has averted a planned nationwide industrial action by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) after reaching a series of binding agreements on outstanding welfare and salary arrears during high-level talks at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The meeting, chaired by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, brought together key stakeholders including the Ministers of Health, Labour, and Finance, as well as the Accountant-General of the Federation and NARD leadership. The intervention came shortly after resident doctors issued a seven-day strike ultimatum over unpaid promotion arrears, delayed call-duty allowances, and safety concerns.
Under the truce negotiated by the Presidency, the government committed to a strict one-week timeline to resolve critical financial demands. These commitments include the immediate payment of salary and promotion arrears, finalization of professional allowance templates, and settlement of disputed call-duty allowances. Furthermore, a standing directive was issued ensuring that house officers receive their monthly payments on or before the 10th of every month.
Speaking after the session, NARD President Dr. Mohamed Suleiman confirmed the suspension of the planned strike, expressing confidence in the agreed timelines and noting that legislative frameworks are also underway to classify assaults against healthcare workers as aggravated offenses.
