Top figures in the All Progressives Congress, including Alhassan Doguwa and Abdullahi Ganduje, have endorsed Murtala Garo for the position of Deputy Governor of Kano State.
Mr Doguwa disclosed the endorsement in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, noting that the decision was reached during a late-night strategy meeting involving key party stakeholders.
According to him, Mr Garo secured about 90 per cent support from participants at the meeting, emerging as the preferred candidate among those considered.
“Garo is the most suitable candidate. He has remained consistent, patient, and loyal. This is the kind of support the governor needs at a critical time,” Mr Doguwa said.
The endorsement follows the recent resignation of former Deputy Governor Abdussalam Gwarzo, which created a vacancy in the state’s leadership structure.
Party leaders are now rallying to fill the position with a candidate they believe can stabilise governance.
Although other contenders, including Rabiu Bichi and Kabiru Rurum, were initially considered, deliberations reportedly tilted strongly in favour of Mr Garo.
Additional backing also came from Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo and other party chieftains.
Experience profile
Mr Garo brings extensive political experience, having served in multiple roles, including commissioner, party official, and adviser.
He was also the APC deputy governorship candidate in the 2023 elections, further strengthening his credentials within the party.
Mr Doguwa urged Governor Abba Yusuf to consider the recommendation, stressing that Garo’s emergence would enhance unity and governance.
Stakeholders expressed optimism that the move would help stabilise Kano’s political environment.
