A fierce political storm is brewing in the National Assembly as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central has dragged fellow senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi (Ebonyi North) to court, demanding a staggering N5 billion in damages for alleged defamation.
In a suit filed at the FCT High Court, Akpoti-Uduaghan is accusing Nwaebonyi of launching a character assassination campaign against her during a March 6, 2025, interview on Channels Television, where he allegedly branded her a “gold digger, habitual liar, and blackmailer,” and controversially claimed she has six children from different men.
Describing the remarks as “malicious, reckless, and deeply damaging,” the senator says the comments were aimed at destroying her reputation and discouraging women from entering politics. She’s not only demanding a hefty compensation but also a court order restraining Nwaebonyi from repeating the claims and directing him to issue a public apology via national media.
The lawsuit has ignited debate across political circles and social media, with many seeing it as a test of dignity versus dirty political mudslinging in Nigeria’s upper chamber.
