The Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Lagos, Michel Deelen, has urged Nigerians to shun illegal migration and embrace legal pathways when seeking opportunities abroad.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on VOPTV’s EduDialogue Program, Deelen advised prospective travellers to be truthful throughout the visa application process, stressing that providing false information can jeopardize legitimate applications and undermine trust in the system.

He also warned against irregular migration, noting that it often exposes individuals to exploitation, danger, and unnecessary hardship.

Despite the country’s current challenges, the Dutch diplomat described Nigeria as a nation of immense potential, encouraging citizens to believe in the country’s future and contribute meaningfully to its development rather than pursuing unsafe and illegal migration routes.

Deelen further highlighted several legitimate opportunities available to Nigerians, including scholarships, fellowships, academic exchange programmes, and other educational and professional pathways to the Netherlands and other European countries.
