The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Taraba State, Williams Peter Awoshiri, has condemned ongoing violence in parts of the state, calling for peace and unity.
In his 2026 Easter message issued on Sunday, the cleric described the violence in Takum and Donga Local Government Areas as tragic and unacceptable.
He urged residents to embrace peaceful coexistence and reflect on the spiritual significance of Easter, which he said symbolises hope, renewal, and victory over despair.
“Easter is not merely a seasonal celebration, but a profound spiritual reality that defines our faith. It reassures us that despair is never the end and that, in Christ, victory is certain,” he said.
Call for unity
Mr Awoshiri appealed to residents across religious and ethnic lines to promote tolerance and mutual respect, stressing that diversity should be a strength rather than a source of division.
“Our diversity should not be a source of division but a strength that enriches our collective existence,” he added.
Security concerns
The CAN chairman expressed deep concern over the continued violence in southern Taraba, lamenting the loss of lives and destruction of property.
“The continuous shedding of innocent blood is both tragic and unacceptable. It contradicts the will of God, who values every human life and calls us to live in peace,” he said.
He emphasised that sustainable development cannot thrive in an atmosphere of insecurity and instability.
Appeal for dialogue
Mr Awoshiri called on all parties involved in the crisis to embrace dialogue, justice, and understanding, urging an end to violence and reprisals.
He also commended the efforts of the Taraba State Government, security agencies, and local vigilante groups, while calling for more proactive and sustained interventions.
Support for victims
The cleric appealed to individuals and organisations to support internally displaced persons affected by the violence through donations of food, clothing, and medical supplies.
He expressed sympathy to victims and bereaved families, assuring them of prayers and solidarity during the difficult period.
Despite the challenges, Mr Awoshiri encouraged residents not to lose hope, stating that the Easter season offers an opportunity for reconciliation and healing.
“We believe that Taraba State shall rise above its challenges and experience peace, healing, and progress,” he said.
