Former Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney has defended VAR’s decision to disallow West Ham United’s late equaliser against Arsenal, insisting officials made the correct call in a crucial Premier League clash.

West Ham believed they had secured a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser when Callum Wilson found the net late in the match.

However, following a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out after officials determined that Pablo Fornals committed a foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya in the build-up.

The decision allowed Arsenal to hold on for a 1-0 victory, moving five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the league table, while West Ham remained in the relegation zone.

Rooney backs VAR decision

Speaking on the “Wayne Rooney Show,” as reported by BBC Sport on Monday, Mr Rooney said the contact on Raya clearly justified the decision.

“It’s a clear foul,” he said.

“I think you can clearly see the arm crosses his face, and it impacts his ability to get there. So I think it’s the right decision.”

The controversial incident has sparked intense debate among fans and pundits, particularly because of its potential impact on both the Premier League title race and relegation battle.

Praise for VAR

Despite criticism often directed at the technology, Mr Rooney praised VAR officials for handling the situation correctly.

“It’s the one time I actually think VAR has done a really good job in such an important game,” he stated.

He acknowledged that reactions to the decision would naturally differ among supporters of Arsenal, West Ham, and rival clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur.

Goalkeeper protection debate

Mr Rooney also discussed what he described as the long-standing protection given to goalkeepers by referees.

“They have got a big advantage… and normally they come out with their knees and the studs down your back,” he said.

The former striker admitted he had always been frustrated by how easily fouls are awarded in favour of goalkeepers.

“Throughout my career as a player, I’ve had a dislike for goalkeepers because of that reason,” he added.

The result strengthened Arsenal’s Premier League title push while increasing pressure on West Ham in the battle to avoid relegation.

The overturned goal has since become one of the most talked-about VAR moments of the season.
