Former England captain Wayne Rooney says the upcoming Premier League showdown between Manchester City and Arsenal FC could determine this season’s title winner.

Rooney made the remarks on his programme, noting that the high-stakes encounter at the Etihad Stadium represents a defining moment in the title race.

League leaders Arsenal, currently six points ahead but having played two more games, face a stern test against a City side chasing from behind.

“I think City will have the edge on that, just purely the manager and players they’ve got. They will be able to stay a little calmer than the Arsenal players,” Rooney said, as reported by BBC Sport.

Psychological edge

Rooney pointed to City’s experience under manager Pep Guardiola as a key factor that could influence the outcome.

He suggested that composure and mentality may give City an advantage over Arsenal, managed by Mikel Arteta, especially under mounting pressure.

Recent form concerns

The former striker noted that recent results have intensified the title race, with City’s 3-0 victory over Chelsea FC contrasting with Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to AFC Bournemouth.

Rooney warned that a dip in form can quickly erode confidence.

“When you go on a run and lose a few games, you start thinking ‘where’s the next goal, the next win going to come from?’ That negative mindset really has an impact on your performance,” he said.

According to Rooney, the outcome of the Etihad clash could shape the remainder of the season.

“Whoever wins will be favourites to win the league,” he stated, while adding that a draw might still benefit Arsenal given their current position.

Tactical advice

Rooney urged Arsenal to adopt a pragmatic approach, focusing on defensive discipline and resilience.

“They need to be tough to break down, make sure there’s no gaps between the lines and try to hit them on the break,” he said, stressing the importance of stopping City from scoring.

He added that results must take priority over style if Arsenal are to maintain their title push.
