Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami has obtained the governorship nomination form of the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi State.
Mr Malami announced his decision in a statement released on Saturday through his social media platforms, citing worsening insecurity, poverty, healthcare challenges, and declining education standards in the state as reasons for entering the race.
According to Mr Malami, Kebbi State is facing one of the most severe governance and humanitarian crises in the country.
He alleged that more than 67 percent of children between the ages of six and 15 are currently out of school, while over 88 percent reportedly live in multidimensional poverty.
The former minister also expressed concern over maternal mortality and inadequate healthcare services in rural communities.
“Many communities lack access to proper antenatal care and essential medical services,” he stated.
Mr Malami’s declaration comes amid increasing political activities and early alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition parties intensifying efforts to challenge incumbent administrations across several states.
Insecurity and economic hardship
Speaking on security challenges, Mr Malami said banditry and kidnappings have continued to disrupt farming and economic activities across Kebbi State.
According to him, many residents now live under fear, while farmers have abandoned farmlands due to persistent attacks.
He accused the current administration of focusing on misplaced priorities despite widespread hardship and insecurity.
‘State of emergency on misgovernance’
Declaring what he described as a “State of Emergency on Misgovernance” in Kebbi, Mr Malami promised to focus on security, education, healthcare, agriculture, and youth empowerment if elected governor.
He said his ambition is rooted in service, accountability, and sustainable development.
“There will be no retreat and no surrender in the collective struggle to rescue our state,” he declared.
Mr Malami also urged residents to support his vision for rebuilding Kebbi into what he described as a safer and more prosperous society.
The move positions Mr Malami as one of the major contenders likely to shape the political landscape in Kebbi State ahead of 2027.
His entry into the race under the ADC platform is expected to intensify political competition in the state, particularly as opposition parties seek to expand their influence before the next election cycle.
