First remembrance prayers for Buhari hold Monday

Former presidential media aide, Bashir Ahmad, has announced plans for a prayer and remembrance gathering to mark the first anniversary of the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement shared on his official X page on Tuesday, Mr Ahmad said the event would be held on Monday, 13 July, to honour Mr Buhari’s life and years of service to Nigeria.

“On Monday, July 13th, we will gather in solemn remembrance to honour the life, legacy and enduring service of our late boss, former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, one year after his passing,” he wrote.

Mr Ahmad described the late former president as a leader who dedicated his life to the service of Nigeria with “commitment, integrity, discipline and patriotism,” adding that his contributions to national development would remain part of the country’s history.

Prayer for late president

Mr Ahmad said family members, friends, associates, and Nigerians would come together in prayer and reflection, while offering prayers for Allah to forgive Mr Buhari’s shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and continue to comfort his loved ones and the nation.

“May Allah grant him eternal rest. Ameen,” the statement concluded.

Buhari’s legacy

Mr Buhari died on 13 July 2025, at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness at a clinic in London.

His remains were later flown back to Nigeria, where he was buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

The late former president served as Nigeria’s democratically elected leader from 29 May 2015, to 29 May 2023, becoming the first opposition candidate in the country’s history to defeat an incumbent president after winning the 2015 presidential election.

Mr Buhari was re-elected in 2019 and completed his second term in 2023.
