Following the recent incident involving Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye, a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, who was reportedly assaulted by a female student, former students have spoken out in his defense, praising his dedication, kindness, and mentorship.
Dr. Okoye, a respected lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies, has been described as a father figure and a role model to many. Expressing their disappointment over the incident, his past students took to social media to commend his character and contributions to the academic community.
One of his former students, Ugochukwu Duoh, expressed deep regret over the situation, emphasizing Dr. Okoye’s impact on students’ lives.
“It is truly disheartening to see the level of disrespect directed at Dr. Chukwudi, a man who has been more than just a teacher—he has been a father, a mentor, and a guiding light to many of us,” Duoh wrote. “This kind of behavior is unacceptable and should never be condoned.”
Another former student, Franklin Okechukwu Onwubiko, described Dr. Okoye as a calm, brilliant, and jovial lecturer, condemning the student’s actions.
“This attitude of the girl is so unwarranted and very repulsive. She may soon be looking for another institution to continue her studies,” Onwubiko remarked, adding that Dr. Okoye’s wife, a senior magistrate, could take legal action. However, he noted that Dr. Okoye, known for his religious beliefs, might choose to forgive.
Similarly, Chinedu Collins Egemuka expressed shock, describing Dr. Okoye as one of the best and most responsible lecturers in the institution.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion on respect for educators and the consequences of student misconduct. While the details of the altercation remain unclear, many continue to rally behind Dr. Okoye, recognizing his years of service and dedication to academic excellence.
