The Federal Government of Nigeria has provided fresh updates on its ongoing efforts to extradite Simon Ekpa from Finland, as legal proceedings involving Nnamdi Kanu continue in Nigeria.
Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), confirmed that Nigeria is working closely with Finnish authorities to secure Ekpa’s return. Ekpa, a dual Finnish-Nigerian citizen and prominent Biafra separatist figure, was arrested in Finland in late 2024 over allegations of inciting violence and sponsoring unrest in southeastern Nigeria.
Although reports have circulated claiming that a Finnish court has approved his extradition and scheduled his transfer to Nigeria for July 15, 2025, fact-checkers have debunked these claims. There is no official confirmation of any such court ruling, and Ekpa’s legal team maintains that his case remains under review by Finnish courts.
the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as the trial of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, continues. During a recent hearing, a prosecution witness stated that Ekpa is expected to be extradited soon to face charges related to his support for Kanu and alleged acts of terrorism.
Government officials have reiterated that they are monitoring the legal situation in Finland while also pursuing diplomatic channels to expedite the extradition process.
While the Finnish judicial process is still ongoing, the Nigerian government says it remains committed to ensuring Ekpa faces justice in accordance with international law.
