The Ghana Football Association has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a statement on Monday, the GFA said the decision was approved by its Executive Council in collaboration with key stakeholders, with Queiroz expected to take charge of preparations for the tournament immediately.

“The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association… has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars,” the statement read.

Queiroz replaces Otto Addo, who parted ways with the team on March 31 following a poor run of results.

The Black Stars had lost four consecutive matches and failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite featuring top players like Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo.

The tournament, scheduled to kick off on June 11, 2026, will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Experienced appointment

Queiroz brings significant World Cup experience, having managed teams across four editions of the tournament, including stints with South Africa, Portugal, and Iran.

He guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 World Cup, led Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and coached Iran at the 2014 and 2018 editions.

Across 13 World Cup matches, he has recorded three wins, four draws, and six defeats.

Coaching pedigree

The 73-year-old has also managed top clubs and national teams, including Real Madrid and Manchester United, as well as national sides such as Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar.

The GFA said his vast international experience is expected to boost Ghana’s competitiveness at the tournament.

Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, 2026, in Toronto, before facing England and Croatia in what is expected to be a tough group.
