Michelle Obama, the former American First Lady, has talked about the hardships she and Barack Obama went through while starting off in their relationship. She talked about their finance issues in one of her earlier podcasts on her IMO podcast which she co-hosts with his brother Craig Robinson.
While recording the podcast, Michelle’s brother Robinson asked, “Would you be attracted to a guy who’s not financially sound when you meet him?” To which Michelle replied, “Uh, I married one.”
Michelle discusses how, after meeting Barack, she left her corporate law firm only to have her husband support her throughout her decisions. She describes how his unwavering belief in her was more powerful than finances, stating, “I had somebody who was like, ‘I got your back. The risks you think you’re taking aren’t that crazy, and I’m here to help you.”
She further explains how this is more important in a relationship than the figure on someone’s bank account, saying, “I would rather have that in a partner than someone who simply earns more.”
Michelle encouraged women to go beyond the superficial traits while searching for a partner. To back up her claims, she also said that women have a tendency to judge people based on their outward looks which is very harmful. “There is a difference between observing and assuming. You need to go out there and be truthful while trying to understand a person’s true essence,” she explained.
