Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said he is actively pursuing the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 elections.

Mr Obi stated that he is not afraid of alleged threats and is ready to campaign across Nigeria.

“I’m not certain of the ADC presidential ticket, but I’m fighting for it,” Mr Obi said.

He added that no intimidation would stop his political ambition.

“I am not afraid to campaign anywhere in Nigeria,” he said, despite reports of tto political activities.

Mr Obi’s declaration comes amid growing competition within the ADC over its 2027 presidential ticket.

Several political heavyweights, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, are also linked to the race, setting the stage for a highly contested primary.

The party has recently emerged as a major opposition platform, attracting key political figures and alliances ahead of the next general election.

Mr Obi’s stance signals his determination to remain a central figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics.

Analysts say his insistence on contesting despite threats could energise his support base, while also increasing political tension as campaigns begin to take shape.

His position may also influence negotiations and alignments within the opposition coalition.

Security and Political Climate

Mr Obi has previously condemned threats against opposition figures, insisting that every Nigerian has the constitutional right to campaign freely across the country.

He warned that political intimidation could undermine democratic participation if not addressed.

Background

Mr Obi defected to the ADC in late 2025 as part of a broader opposition realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.

However, internal disagreements within the party over zoning, leadership, and ticket allocation have continued to create uncertainty around who will emerge as the party’s presidential candidate.

Political observers say the contest for the ADC ticket could shape the strength and unity of the opposition heading into the next election cycle.
