The Peoples Democratic Party in Jigawa State has declared its intention to field candidates for all elective positions in the 2027 general elections, dismissing speculation of internal defections and party collapse.
The assurance was given on Sunday during a joint meeting of the State Working Committee and Local Government Chairmen at the party’s secretariat in Dutse by the State Chairman, Babandi Gumel.
Prof. Gumel said the party remains fully prepared to contest across all levels in the next election cycle.
“The party will field candidates in all the elective positions during the forthcoming 2027 general elections,” Mr Gumel stated.
The development comes amid speculation that the PDP’s 2023 governorship candidate, Mustafa Lamido, may defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
However, Mr Gumel dismissed the rumours, attributing them to political opponents.
He described the claims as “the handiwork of political starters who have nothing to show in the area of provision of democratic dividends to the people in Jigawa State.”
Mr Gumel maintained that the party remained united and focused on reclaiming power in the state.
Reference to past leadership
The chairman also referenced the administration of former Governor Sule Lamido, describing the PDP’s governance record as unmatched.
“PDP under the guidance, leadership and tutelage of Dr Sule Lamido is second to none… when the issue of development of the state is being discussed,” he said.
Mr Gumel urged local government leaders to intensify the ongoing electronic registration of members across the state.
He charged them to “work assiduously round the clock to ensure all members are registered” to enable full participation in the party’s primaries.
The chairman also announced the constitution of a 13-member committee to oversee the sale of nomination forms and screening of aspirants.
He directed interested aspirants to contact the committee at the party’s secretariat in Dutse.
According to Mr Gumel, the PDP is repositioning itself to mount a strong challenge in the 2027 elections despite ongoing political speculation.
The party reiterated its readiness to compete and win elections at all levels.
